Why is effort uncool?

Here’s a problem I see: No one wants to look like they’re trying. That’s fine unless you’re like me and trying is the only way you ever learn anything. The more you try, even if you fail, the better you will get at something. This mentality keeps people out of the gym, out of interviews out of love and out of business.

Don’t let it happen to you. Now is a particularly good time to try most anything, in fact. The sheep are terrified, and resources are cheap.

I realized about midway through high school that I was going to grow up to be a very miserable, unskilled person who peaked somewhere around 8th grade unless I began broadening my horizons. And I then very quickly realized there are many skills and talents that I profoundly lack… but failing at first and subsequently working to improve has added so much more fun and value to my life than I ever expected.

Now, I’m in college, and in some ways it is like starting all over again. I love it.

Yeah, I did something like that, too.

Unfortunately it wasn’t until I was about 21, had dropped out of college, started running with a rough crowd and hadn’t talked to my family for about a year-and-a-half.

(All it took was meeting the right girl.)

I completely agree with what you’re saying, but would also point out that there are some well-known examples that go against this trend. . . The first that comes to mind is Lance Armstrong. Many musicians also look like they’re trying very hard when they are really into their music.
